Caring for the elderly is a noble task, and one that few people willingly take on these days. Oftentimes, people are too busy with their career, their family, or their social life to care for an elderly family member or relative. They choose instead to turn over their relative to a nursing home, which is usually the more convenient option.
Some people, however, still prefer to take care of their elderly relative on their own and under their own roof. But this is not always easy, as you may know if you are the primary caregiver to an elderly family member. Taking care of an old and sickly person, no matter how much you love him or her, can become a very demanding job. Sometimes it even requires you to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
With all the responsibilities that come with caring for the elderly, any primary caregiver will be physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted in no time. That is why it is good to be able to get away from time to time and get some much needed rest. In fact, regular breaks from your responsibilities are necessary. They enable you to recharge your batteries so you can continue to care for your relative much more efficiently.
You might be wondering who will take care of your grandmother or your dad while you’re away on vacation. Perhaps you have other relatives who can look after your elderly while you are are away. What if none of your relatives is available? You have two other options: (1) to place your elderly temporarily in a retirement home, or (2) to hire professional home help to care for your relative at home while you are gone.
Temporary placements in retirement homes, also known as respite placements, are quite popular for a number of reasons. First, the people who run these homes are well-trained professionals, so you can be sure your loved one will receive nothing but the best care. Second, most retirement homes today are equipped with special accommodations for respite placements. You can check out the rooms and see what’s available before you sign up your loved one for a brief stay.
Professional home help is a great option if your elderly relative only needs partial assistance and does not require around-the-clock care. Someone will come over to your home, usually 3 times a day for about an hour per visit, to assist your relative in feeding, washing, and dressing, among other things. He or she may also stay overnight, depending on your arrangement.
Either of these options is practical and does not come cheaply. It is difficult to say which one is the more economically viable choice as it depends on the company and the quality of service offered. But cost is certainly something you will have to consider if you are working with a rather tight budget. You may have to pay to have someone else take care of your elderly relative for a short while, but it is usually a worthwhile expense. It means you can finally get the rest you need and deserve.
